NFL analyst Mina Kimes believes Justin Jefferson only needs "average quarterback play" from Kyler Murray to give the Vikings a massive upgrade over J.J. McCarthy in 2026.
Kimes made the claim on a recent podcast, pointing to McCarthy's 28 percent off-target rate when throwing to Jefferson last season. That rate was nearly double what Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins posted targeting the same receiver.
What did Mina Kimes say about Justin Jefferson and the Vikings' QB battle?
"If Kyler Murray brings even average quarterback play, which I think he is capable of, whether or not that ceiling looks more like it did in 2020 has to do with a variety of factors, including his deep ball coming back," Kimes said.
"To me, that's a massive upgrade, and it's so important for this group of talented wide receivers to play with a competent quarterback."
The Vikings signed Murray this offseason after he spent six years with the Arizona Cardinals. He's expected to compete with McCarthy for the starting role.
Why does Justin Jefferson need better QB play in 2026?
Jefferson still posted 1,000-plus receiving yards for a sixth straight season in 2025. But he caught just two touchdown passes all year. That's a stunning drop for a player widely considered the best receiver in football.
Kimes didn't hold back. "Justin Jefferson should never have a season like the one we saw last year," she said. "He is one of, if not the best, receivers in football, and he was really limited by quarterback play."
McCarthy struggled with injuries and accuracy. His 28 percent off-target rate to Jefferson tells the story. The receiver's frustration was visible as the season wore on.
How does Kyler Murray change things for Justin Jefferson?
Murray brings mobility and a stronger arm. He's a former No. 1 overall pick who threw for 3,971 yards and 26 touchdowns in his 2020 Pro Bowl season. Even a version of Murray at 80 percent of that peak would be a clear upgrade.
Kimes said the entire team failed Jefferson, not just the quarterback. But the QB play was the biggest problem. Murray, even at average level, should fix that.
The Vikings went 9-8 last season and missed the playoffs despite a five-game winning streak to close the year. Better QB play could flip that record in 2026.
What comes next for Justin Jefferson and the Vikings' QB room?
Training camp will decide the starter. McCarthy has the youth and the draft capital — the Vikings took him 10th overall in 2024. But Murray has the experience and, according to Kimes, a much higher floor.
Jefferson's production depends on who wins the job. If Murray starts, expect the deep ball to return. If McCarthy starts, the pressure is on him to prove he can hit his star receiver.
Either way, Jefferson's 2026 season starts with a QB competition that could define the Vikings' year.
