Minnesota Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson could hold the deciding vote in the team’s 2026 quarterback competition. Mike Florio of PFT Live argued on 18 June that Jefferson’s opinion could sway the entire locker room—and the front office.
What Florio said about Jefferson’s influence
Florio told PFT Live that head coach Kevin O’Connell will lean on Jefferson’s stance before naming Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy the Week 1 starter. “I think the key to all of this is going to be Justin Jefferson,” Florio said. “If O’Connell has Jefferson on board with his decision, Jefferson, I believe, will make sure the rest of the team is on board with it too.”
Why Jefferson’s voice matters now
Jefferson, the NFL’s highest-paid receiver, has yet to win a playoff game in Minnesota. Florio warned that pushing the wrong QB could push Jefferson toward a trade demand. “Because if it's good with Jefferson, the guy who is the most affected, one of the highest paid receivers in the league, highest paid player on the team… If Justin Jefferson says Kyler Murray's my guy, [even] if Murray would not seem to be at McCarthy's level when the decision is made, then I think it will be okay,” Florio added.
Could McCarthy still win the job?
Florio left room for McCarthy to claim the gig. He suggested Jefferson might even prefer McCarthy, citing their past chemistry. Still, the call rests with O’Connell. “Ultimately the decision will be O’Connell’s to make,” Florio said. “But it is hard to imagine that Jefferson’s input won’t be considered.”
What’s next for the Vikings
All eyes turn to Minnesota’s training camp QB battle. The winner must lead the Vikings to the NFC playoffs—or risk Jefferson’s patience running thin. The stakes are simple: win the NFC North or at least earn a wild-card spot in 2026.
